Friends, in today’s article, we are going to talk about ₹1, half rupee (₹0.50), and quarter rupee (₹0.25) coins that were issued after India’s independence and have now become quite valuable. These coins may also be found in your home, but some of them are extremely rare and sell for high prices—possibly without your knowledge.
All these coins were issued between 1950 and 1956. These belonged to the Anna system, where ₹1 = 16 Annas and 1 Anna = 4 Pice.

₹1 Coins
These coins were issued in the years 1950 and 1954. Made of nickel, they weigh 11.66 grams. The design features the Ashoka Pillar on one side and wheat ears on the other.
- 1950 Coin:
- Fine to Extra Fine condition: ₹200 – ₹500
- UNC (Uncirculated) condition: Up to ₹1200
- 1954 Coin:
- Very Fine to Extra Fine: ₹1500 – ₹2500
- UNC condition: Up to ₹6500
- Both coins were minted in Bombay Mint.

Half Rupee (₹0.50) Coins
Issued from 1950 to 1956, these were also made of nickel, weighed 5.83 grams, and measured 24 mm in diameter.
- 1950 Coins (Bombay & Kolkata Mint):
- Bombay Mint: ₹25 – ₹75 (Fine–XF), ₹1000 (UNC)
- Kolkata Mint: ₹50 – ₹500 (Fine–XF), ₹1500 (UNC)
- 1951 (Bombay Mint only):
- ₹25 – ₹75 (Fine–XF), ₹700 (UNC)
- 1954 (Kolkata Mint only):
- ₹15 – ₹50 (Fine–XF), ₹500 (UNC)
- 1955 (Bombay Mint only):
- ₹100 – ₹500 (Fine–XF), ₹2500 (UNC)
- 1956 (Kolkata Mint only):
- ₹15 – ₹50 (Fine–XF), ₹500 (UNC)

Quarter Rupee (₹0.25) Coins
Issued from 1950 to 1956, these coins were made of nickel, weighed 2.92 grams, and had a size of 19.10 mm.
- 1950 (Bombay & Kolkata Mint):
- Bombay Mint: ₹25 – ₹75 (Fine–XF), ₹300 (UNC)
- Kolkata Mint: ₹25 – ₹100 (Fine–XF), ₹400 (UNC)
- 1951 (Both Mints):
- ₹15 – ₹50 (Fine–XF), ₹200 (UNC)
- 1954:
- ₹15 – ₹50 (Fine–XF), ₹200 (UNC)
- 1955:
- Bombay Mint: ₹75 – ₹400 (Fine–XF), ₹2000 (UNC)
- Kolkata Mint: ₹15 – ₹50 (Fine–XF), ₹200 (UNC)
- 1956 (Kolkata Mint only):
- ₹15 – ₹50 (Fine–XF), ₹200 (UNC)
